Summer School 2024

TYPICAL TYPE

August 20 - 22, 2024

Looking forward to an inspiring and fun summer? During the fourth Graphic Matters Summer School, you develop (new) skills, make friends, meet design legends and dive into the world of letters, characters and typography together with us.

  • Masterclasses

This year we welcome designers and typography heroes Team Thursday, Vera van de Seyp and Kristyan Sarkis. All three are giving a three-day masterclass. Click on the name of the master to see the programme, the required materials and skills for the masterclass.

📚 Loes van Esch and Simone Trum form Team Thursday together and design colourful visual identities, books and spatial objects from Rotterdam. They do this with a special interest in typography and curiosity about materials; always looking for patterns in everything and everywhere around them.

👾 In her work, Vera van de Seyp investigates generative design tools, computational typography, artificial intelligence and systems in chaos. She is currently part of MIT Media Lab (US) as a research assistant where she works at the intersection of AI and graphic/type design tools.

✍️ Born in Beirut, type designer and artist Kristyan Sarkis currently works from Amsterdam. He is co-founder of TPTQ Arabic, a design studio specialising in high-quality Arabic typefaces.

  • Theme

Letters and signs: from a young age, we learn to use them without actually questioning them. Do you look at letters differently when you delve into the origins or future of serif characters and realise what meaning they (can) carry with them?

The Graphic Matters programme of 2024/2025 is entirely dedicated to the theme ‘Typical Type‘, which we officially kick off with this Summer School. During the three days, letters, characters and typography take centre stage.

Within (graphic) design, typography often plays an important role. Characters are not only essential for effective communication, but also for cultural understanding and inclusion. Letters are the result of hundreds of years of discovery, discussion and exchange. How we shape letters contributes to the emotional charge and impact of our communication.

The masterclasses give depth to the theme from an investigative, craft and future-oriented perspective. The masters share their typographic skills and knowledge about current developments in the field.

  • Graphic Matters Summer School

With the support of Keep An Eye Foundation, Graphic Matters has organised an annual Summer School for (young) designers, taught by internationally renowned designers, since 2021.

There is room for up to 15 participants per masterclass. You learn a lot, broaden your network and meet like-minded people. The masterclasses focus on current professional themes, the development of specific skills, experimenting and having fun. During the three days, a special group dynamic is created in which people learn not only from the masters, but also from each other.

Both students and professionals sign up for the masterclasses. Participants from all over the world join – from Breda to Korea, from Bulgaria to England. These different backgrounds create a very diverse and inspiring group of creatives.

“I really enjoyed talking to like-minded people and just sharing a space, some work, thoughts and experiences.” – Filip Boyadzhiev, 2023

  • Tickets

Regular tickets cost only €129 for students and €199 for professionals. Tickets include lunch/coffee/tea/water for three days and access to the Morning Talks.

A ticket gives you access to one of the three masterclasses. So you choose Vera’s, Kristyan’s or Team Thursday’s masterclass.
