Taped to the wall in schools and offices, motivational posters push us to try harder, set goals, and just do it. In this workshop, create a poster that inspires you to grow, flourish, and care for yourself—or, if you prefer, to embrace your grumpy side. On the first day, we will produce design elements with piped cocoa frosting. This dark, shiny material creates playful, delightfully imperfect, sensually appealing forms. We will spend the first afternoon producing letters, words, shapes, icons, and textures. On the following days, you will scan assets and create a series of posters.
Supplies: Ellen will bring some icing in pastry bags.
Please have additional supplies on hand to mix more frosting as needed (cocoa, confectioners sugar).
In her books and exhibitions, Lupton demonstrates how posters are not only informative but can also make a visual statement. She emphasises how designers can use typefaces, colour and layout to capture the public’s attention and convey a message effectively. For her, posters are an important medium in which the theory and practice of graphic design converge.
