Current Characters VI: Summer School Masters

Current Characters is a lecture series by Graphic Matters about the power of graphic design. Designers who push boundaries —from typography to technology— share their work and their view of the world. For everyone with an interest in visual communication and social themes.

On Tuesday morning August 19, we will kick off the Summer School with the Current Characters VI. The three masters will each give a presentation about their working methods, inspiration and ambition. This is free for Summer School participants, for other interested parties a ticket is €10,- including coffee, tea and a croissant to start your day well.

MASTERS

Gemma O’Brien

Gemma O’Brien is an internationally renowned designer and artist known for her bold graphics, illustrative lettering and murals. Her work has been commissioned by Apple, Nike, Google, and is held in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City. Outside her commercial design work, she explores language, nature and the human experience through her art practice. In 2025, she is conducting research on flow states in visual artists at Goldsmiths, University of London, as part of the MSc program in Neuroaesthetics.

SchultzSchultz

Marc Schütz was born in 1977 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He studied at the University of Art and Design in Offenbach. In 2007, he co-founded the design studio Schultzschultz. Throughout his career, he has served as a type design instructor at HfG Offenbach and HfG Karlsruhe, and as a typography professor at Bauhaus University and HfG Offenbach. He is also member of Alliance Graphique Internationale. Marc lives and works in Frankfurt.

Britt Möricke

Letters caught Britt Moricke early. At 12, she discovered Edward Johnston’s strokes and fell headfirst into the art of calligraphy. That obsession took her to the Royal Academy of Art (BA, 2002) and, even deeper, into the Type & Media master’s program at KABK (MA, 2003). Since 2004, she has been designing, teaching, and challenging ideas about type and typography in art schools across the Netherlands.

Studio Saber

Saber Javanmard (b. 1985, Iran) is a multidisciplinary typographic artist based in The Hague. Founder of Studio Saber (2018), he pushes the boundaries of design, calligraphy, and painting. His work explores LANGUAGE & TYPOGRAPHY. He builds bridges between East and West by experimenting with the visual and linguistic features of Latin, Farsi, and Arabic scripts.
