Recap
FREE TODAY,
FREE FOREVER!

In early October, we created a mural featuring the phrase “Free Today, Free Forever | Vandaag vrij, altijd vrij.” More than 60 volunteers completed this 105-meter-long and 6-meter-high temporary mural in just 16 hours. The text is taken from the work of Surinamese writer, resistance fighter, and anti-colonial activist Anton de Kom (1898–1945) and stands as a symbol of the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice.

For the mural, American designer Tré Seals (Vocal Type) created the typeface VTC WIJ, inspired by the protests surrounding the rehabilitation of Anton de Kom. Through his designs, Seals shows that letters are more than just shapes; they embody history, identity, and power.

The message “Free Today, Free Forever” is as relevant as it is urgent. While De Kom once fought against colonial oppression, his call remains powerful in today’s ongoing struggle against inequality and injustice. With this project, we aim to connect historical voices with contemporary creativity, showing how design can be a powerful tool for awareness and change.

The mural marks the beginning of a series of activities within the project CHARACTERS: Voices in Type, developed in collaboration with American designer Tré Seals (Vocal Type) and design studio Civilization. Through this project, we explore the role of typography in protest movements around the world and how letterforms can contribute to representation and social change. From October 2025 to March 2026, the program will include workshops, exhibitions, and a conference bringing together typography, activism, and social justice.
