The workshop is part of CHARACTERS: Voices in Type, a project that highlights how history, design, and social change are deeply connected. Especially for this project, designer Tré Seals created the typeface VTC WIJ, inspired by the words and determination of Anton de Kom. This new typeface forms the foundation of the workshop.
Using the global Orange the World campaign as a starting point, students worked in pairs using the online design tool Canva. They came up with strong statements, experimented with composition, and experienced how typography can take on a voice of its own. The result: a series of 50 powerful typographic protest posters, now displayed throughout the school.
The workshop didn’t just open up the conversation, students experienced firsthand what it feels like to take action and give visual strength to their own voice.
