Summer School 2022

Want to spend your Summer in a useful, inspiring and fun way? During a new Graphic Matters Summer School, from 16 – 24 August, you can develop your skills, make new friends and of course meet design masters.

This year, Summer School is all about 3D design! The programme consists of four masterclasses, hosted by international design professionals. There’s also an additional programme with excursions, workshops and talks. Are you a graphic designer, illustrator and/or artist and like what you hear? Then apply for the Graphic Matters Summer School!

We aim to offer the chance to develop new skills to a diverse audience, but also strongly value the feeling of togetherness. You won’t just be developing your own skills, but will also be working together with the other participants. And besides working, of course there will be time for some more leisurely activities too! With an extensive side-programma (free for masterclass participants) you will get to know 3D design, the masters, the city of Breda and each other even better.

  • About this year's theme

Since the first developments in the sixties, technology has evolved to a wide range of software to create realistic CGI objects and worlds. Thanks to the user-friendliness and efficiency of these programmes, visual artists have been using them more often in various and innovative ways; think of typography, character- and isometrical design. 3D design can bring visual variety to a project, emphasise specific elements and – when combined with two-dimensionality – add new life to an image. It makes you look further than the image in front of you; it allows you to see the space around you.

The possibilities are endless, fascinating and sometimes even overwhelming. 3D isn’t bound to one medium or discipline and can be interesting to every designer; whether you create still, moving or spacial visuals. But what does three-dimensionality mean to you as a visual artist? And, what cóuld it mean?

  • Side programme

For the ultimate Summer School experience you can also attend a unique side programme. Everyone can attend these events, so not just the masterclass participants.

    • 3D Talks – August 17, 18, 22 & 23 at BANK15 – an (English spoken) talkshow with the Summer School masters. An informal evening to get to know each other better.
    • Blind Walls Gallery tour – date t.b.a.: walk or cycle through the city centre of  Breda with a tourguide and discover the museum on the street.
    • Excursion – August 20 – a visit to the largest flower parade in the world.
  • Location

The masterclasses take place in the De Uitvindfabriek. This former candy factory is now an inspiring event location for young and old visitors where technology, innovation and sustainability come together.

  • Travel tips

  • Keep An Eye Foundation

Summer School is made possible by the Keep An Eye Foundation.

The Keep an Eye Foundation supports young, promising talent within the field of art and design. Thanks to various scholarships, awards, shows and festivals, creative makers get the chance to develop their talent, create new opportunities and above all, realise their dreams.

This shared ambition has led to a three-year collaboration consisting of a yearly programme of various masterclasses.
